New accommodation Danshuis Station Zuid becomes a reality
Danshuis Station Zuid was finally able to send up the balloons this week now that the Tilburg city council has also approved the conversion of the Remmers building into a true centre for dance. This became clear last Monday afternoon when the council’s committee for social issues without any hesitation approved the plans and budget for the conversion that had taken such preparation. Where hammers used to blow and machines used to drone, we will soon be hearing music and thumping on the three spacious dance floors. By April 2010 the conversion will have been completed.

Three studios, public space, offices, depot and physiotherapy
After the summer, work will begin on the conversion of the former coachworks at no. 7 Ringbaan Noord, led by the Belgian goup of architects B-Architecten. In the spring of 2010 the move will take place. The dance house will then have at its disposal three of its own dance studios with dressing rooms and sanitary facilities, offices, storage depots, facilities for physiotherapy, and a public space. The Remmers building will be a temporary home: the next move is planned in five year’s time.

The many new tracks laid out by Danshuis Station Zuid
After the pioneering work of its early years, Danshuis Station Zuid over the past month has started on a new phase in its existence as the ultimate centre for dance makers in the Dutch South. As THE place for dance makers in the South, with a core group of regular contributors and its own accomodation on the way, the dance house has changed into a completely revamped corporate image and website in het nieuwe jasje van een compleet vernieuwde huisstijl en website gestoken.

We have also launched our second website www.centraaldanssation.com. It already offers an inexhaustible digital overview of the history of Western dance, with lots more to follow.

The first Dance Night: a spectacular kick-off
All of this took place on the eve of Danshuis Station Zuid’s first Dansnacht on 5 June, in, around, underneath, and even on top of the buildings of Theaters Tilburg. It was a fantastic interactive dance show of great artistic quality presenting southern dance makers and talents in many different guises and in many different unexpected locations.

There were performances on stages-on-the-stage, in the elevators, cellars, and even the offices of Theaters Tilburg to surprise the countless dance enthusiasts who had been tempted into attending the nocturnal dance festivities. Theaters Tilburg almost literally shook to its foundations with so many wide-ranging dance experiences, ending in a great big Final Ball for all.

‘Nude’ by Pia Meuthen: ‘experience’ it in Eindhoven
Choreographer Pia Meuthen in action during the creative process for her new performance ‘Nude’: ‘experience’ it at her public rehearsal in Eindhoven on 26 June. A unique opportunity for new and experienced professionals to witness the dancers and choreographer lose themselves in the creative process and achieve their results through blood, sweat, and tears.

We are referring to the performance that will premiere in Tilburg on 1 October to go on a national tour. This is an opportunity you cannot afford to miss. Watch the celebrated dance maker Meuthen drawing every last thing out of her dancers to be able to tell her own story through their movement language, expression, and inspiration, based on the book ‘Tussen een persoon’ by Esther Gerritsen.

Discussion Afterwards
During the public rehearsal at the HTZ building on no 12 Fuutlaan in Eindhoven, on 26 June at 16:00 hrs, Meuthen and her dancers will demonstrate parts of the performance they are creating. Afterwards they will discuss this with the people present. This rehearsal is meant exclusively for dance professionals and students of dance,  who can sign in via e-mail: pia@panamapictures.nl

Dans & Literature-project
A Unique collabration with Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant

As Danshuis Station Zuid we try to find encounters within, as well as outside of dance. With design , the theatre, but now with literature as well! With the Midden-Brabant library we have developed ‘Dance & Literature’. As part of this project participants will read ‘Tussen een persoon’ by Esther Gerritsen and visit our latest performance Nude, that was inspired by the book.

‘Dance and Literature’ will start on 26 June, when the first readers will receive the book. After they have finished it, they will pass on the book to friends, family members, or complete strangers. The book’s circulation will be tracked through a weblog on the internet, making it clear at all times who has the book, to whom it was passed on, and what their comments on the book are.

DanceDuologues & Nude
Anyone can attend the DanceDuologue prior to the performance. For about half an hour, an interviewer will moderate a talk between choreographer  Pia Meuthen and composer Jeroen Strijbos, who both worked on Nude. Linked to the reading of the book and visiting the DanceDuologues is a visit to the performance Nude by Danshuis Station Zuid & Panama Pictures at a local theatre. With the background information from the book and the DanceDuologue, the spectators will see this dance theatre performance through different eyes.

The Moving Cinema best online dance cinema
The leading European magazine ‘Ballet-Tanz’ in Germany has declared Project Sally’s website www.themovingcinema.com the best online cinema for dance enthusiasts. Danshuis Station Zuid takes part in the set-up of this virtual cinema; in cinema 4 we are showing ‘The making of-performances’ of our productions.

The Moving Cinema is a publicly accessible online home cinema with four film theatres filled with dance fun. The web cinema consists of four virtual cinemas. ‘Cinema 1’ plays new and impressive dance films. In ‘Cinema 2’ you can watch cinema variété, in which dance is highlighted from different unexpected angles. Dance classics form the programme for the third cinema. The four cinemas are programmed with fresh films every three months.

T.R.A.S.H. wins Dance Award 2009 Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds
That Tilburg City of Dance is a breeding ground for professional talent and innovation in dance has once again been proved by the high-profile award that the company T.R.A.S.H. has scooped up: the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Noord Brabant Dance Award 2009. It is an award for the complete work, which will be handed to T.R.A.S.H on 4 October during the Dance Gala of the South which is organised in part by Danshuis Station Zuid at Theaters Tilburg. This will also see the premiere of a new choreography T.R.A.S.H. is currently creating commissioned by Danshuis Station Zuid.

EDN Barcelona
We have further strengthened Danshuis Station Zuid’s artistic network with the recent setting up of the European Dancehouse Network (EDN) association. This has given the EDN the formal status required for the many shared activities and exchanges we are planning. Foremost among these is the shared support in Europe of dance and dance makers/practitioners in the widest sense.

The association was established at the homebase of our colleagues at dance house Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, which now also houses the association’s secretariat. As our chairman we have named Bertrand Müller, director at Tanzhaus Nordrhein Westfalen in Düsseldorf, also known as the ‘mother of all European dance houses’.
