Pia Meuthen has been working as a freelance choreographer since 1998 and is the artistic director of the Panama Pictures foundation. Pia was educated at the Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and the Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg. Pia’s way of telling a story, in which dance and performance complement and enhance each other, is accessible and at the same time full of nuance.
Her performances deal with people. Her recurring themes include the contrast between the need for control and the desire to lose yourself, and the game of desire, temptation, and rejection. She gets her inspiration from pose and films. The dancers’ personal contributions and their unique personalities play an important role in the creation of her productions. She also collaborates with different artists from different disciplines for each performance, such as composers, video artists, directors and writers.
In 2005 her successful dance theatre production Unmade Beds was nominated for the VSCD-dance award for best production. In the spring of 2008 Pia Meuthen created Newbodies, her first production for Danshuis Station Zuid. Other productions by Pia include DesertTrip, il est mort and odd. In October 2009 she will be producing Nude with Danshuis Station Zuid.
