The South of the Netherlands is a fertile dance zone. Dance in the South seems increasingly to reveal itself as a synthesis of the academic dance by companies such as the Nederlands Danstheater and the rougher, more theatrical dance from Germany and Flanders. An exciting dance climate is developing in which a great deal of talent is beginning to settle.
Young talent from the circuit of the smaller venues will now be performing on the main stages. Danshuis Station Zuid presents four productions in its ‘Dance Gala of the South 2009’ that stress the diversity in this buzzing dance region. Performances with a contemporary and smart dance vocabulary, yet rooted in respectable traditions.
With quick set changes, Danshuis Station Zuid is taking its audiences along on a discovery of the many breeding grounds for talent from south of the main rivers in the Netherlands. A gala with a twist, not chic, but special nonetheless. And not just because of the four productions choreographed especially for the gala, but also because of the presentations surrounding them, including meets & greets with the dancers and the choreographers involved. Dancers turning cartwheels on their way across the red carpet, from their stretched limousines to the theatre – this is the type of playfulness that will determine the atmosphere: relaxed, yet ambitious, and with an eye for quality.
The Dance Gala of the South presents four premières by Huis voor de Kunsten Limburg/Project Sally, La Melis/Helma Melis, T.r.a.s.h./Kristel van Issum and Danshuis Station Zuid/Jens van Daele.
