Pride
In his exploration of the seven deadly (or Cardinal) sins, Jens Van Daele has choreographed pieces covering wrath, envy, gluttony and sloth. In his newest creation he tackles the main sin from which all other sins emanate: Pride (in Latin: Superbia).
With his own idiosyncratic explosive style, Van Daele strides against transformation of the female form in the era of plastic surgery and photoshopped images. Superbia unfolds as a fashion show. Up and coming fashion talents Mirthe Engelhard and Gladys Tumewa have created a special clothing collection to compliment this performance. On Superbia's catwalk, Van Daele peels off the layers of our pride and shows us what remains: an insecure, constantly seeking human being trying to remain standing within this photoshopped world.
Superbia is a creation of Stichting Jens Van Daele co-produced by Theaterwerkplaats Generale Oost and Danshuis Station Zuid. The première will take place on the 12 of decedmber 2009 in Arnhem. For more information: www.jensvandaele.com.
